Successful PhD Defense in the Framework of an International Collaboration in Neurosurgery and Biomedical Engineering

On March 10, 2026, the University of Luxembourg hosted the successful defense of a PhD thesis in biomedical engineering conducted within the framework of a collaborative research project involving the National Department of Neurosurgery at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL), the University of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), and partner universities in Houston and Gainesville, USA.

This doctoral work was carried out through an interdisciplinary collaboration bringing together clinical expertise in neurosurgery, engineering sciences, and translational research. The PhD candidate was jointly supervised by neurosurgeons from CHL, researchers from the University of Luxembourg and LIH, and academic collaborators from the two partner institutions in the United States.

The objective of the thesis was to extract relevant information from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data in order to identify areas in which brain tumors may later undergo malignant transformation. This research contributes to ongoing efforts to improve the understanding of tumor progression and to support the development of more precise diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

The work included the critical analysis of publicly available imaging databases, the study of anonymized MRI patient data collected within an approved research protocol, and the use of experimental animal data for analysis and hypothesis testing.

The project has resulted in several scientific publications, the filing of a patent application, and the nomination of the thesis by the examination committee for the University of Luxembourg’s Best Doctoral Thesis Award.

This successful defense represents an important milestone in a productive research collaboration that is expected to continue. Further work is planned to pursue several of the developments arising from this research and to explore their potential for future medical application.

This achievement highlights the importance of interdisciplinary and international collaboration in advancing research in neurosurgery and biomedical engineering.
